Rishikesh sits where the Ganga descends from the Himalayas onto the plains — and something about that meeting point creates an energy that's genuinely hard to describe. Pilgrims, yogis, adventure tourists, and travellers on gap years all converge here, and somehow it works.

For couples, Rishikesh offers a rare combination: enough adventure to get your heart racing (the bungee here is at 83 metres — India's highest), enough quiet to slow down (a yoga class at dawn beside the river), and a café culture that's genuinely excellent for a town of 100,000 people.

Best Things to Do Together in Rishikesh

White-water rafting on the Ganga: The classic Rishikesh experience. The 16km stretch from Shivpuri to Nimbechwala (Grade 2–3 rapids, 2 hours) is the sweet spot — exciting but not terrifying. Cost: ₹600–800 per person including a beach campfire lunch. The 36km stretch from Marine Drive has Grade 3–4 rapids and is better for experienced rafters.

Bungee at Jumpin Heights: At 83m, this is India's highest bungee jump. The setup is professional — Swiss cables, DGCA-certified instructors. Cost: ₹3,550 per person. They also offer giant swing (₹2,550) and flying fox (₹1,300) for those who want to work up to the full jump. Book online at jumpinheights.com — walk-ins are turned away during peak season.

Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Ashram): The Beatles recorded much of the White Album here in 1968. Now an overgrown, graffiti-covered ruin inside a forest reserve — and one of the most atmospheric places in Rishikesh. Entry: ₹600 per person. Walk through the abandoned meditation domes with mural-covered walls at golden hour.

Triveni Ghat Ganga Aarti: Every evening at sunset, priests perform an elaborate fire ceremony at Triveni Ghat. Unlike Haridwar's Aarti (which draws enormous crowds), Rishikesh's version is intimate and genuinely moving. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good spot.

Yoga at Parmarth Niketan: The largest ashram in Rishikesh runs daily yoga classes (7 AM, ₹200 per person) and a riverside morning meditation that's open to visitors. You don't need to be a practitioner — just show up.

Where to Stay

Budget (₹800–2,000)Ashram / hostel / guesthouse₹1,200Tapovan, Laxman Jhula

Luxury (₹5,000+)Glamping / forest retreat₹8,000+Shivpuri (15km upstream)

For a romantic experience: Camp on the Ganga banks at Shivpuri or Byasi. Several operators (Camp Aquaterra, Red Chilli) run luxury river camps (₹5,000–9,000 per couple with meals) that include campfire nights, stargazing, and morning rafting. These are among the most romantic overnight experiences in north India.

For a city base: Zostel Rishikesh (Tapovan) is excellent for budget travellers. Hotel Divine Ganga Cottage (Muni Ki Reti) is mid-range with river views.

Getting to Rishikesh

From Delhi: Buses run from ISBT Kashmere Gate and Anand Vihar (₹400–700, 6–7 hours). The Dehradun Shatabdi from New Delhi station is the most comfortable option (₹900, 5 hours to Dehradun, then 1-hour bus to Rishikesh).

From Dehradun: Rishikesh is 43km. Shared jeeps (₹60) and buses (₹50) run constantly from Dehradun Railway Station and ISBT. A private cab costs ₹600–800.

Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (35km). Direct flights from Delhi (50 min, ₹2,500–5,000). Budget options use Delhi as the hub and take the bus.

Important: Rishikesh proper is a traffic maze. Most travellers stay in Tapovan or Laxman Jhula areas — a 10-15 minute rickshaw or walk from the main bus stand. Get dropped at Ram Jhula for easier access.

Best Cafés & Restaurants in Rishikesh

Rishikesh is mostly vegetarian (no meat served in the city; alcohol banned). But the café scene is excellent and surprisingly cosmopolitan:

Café Sunrise (Tapovan): Riverside views, best smoothie bowls in Rishikesh. Open 7 AM — the early morning light on the Ganga from the terrace is genuinely magical.

The Sitting Elephant (Tapovan): Rooftop seating, wood-fired pizza, excellent coffee. Perfect for an evening with mountain views.

Little Buddha Café: Classic Rishikesh institution. Western and Indian fusion, chocolate cake that draws dedicated pilgrims of its own.

Bistro Nirvana: The best thali in Rishikesh. Unlimited, ₹180. Sit on the floor and eat like a local.

*Note: No alcohol is served in Rishikesh restaurants or shops. If you want a drink, Haridwar (25km) is also dry — your nearest option is Dehradun or guesthouses in the Shivpuri camp area outside city limits.*
