Shimla doesn't need an introduction — 2.6 million tourists visit every year, making it the most popular hill station in north India. But what makes it special for couples is harder to put into words: the way evening fog rolls over Mall Road, the smell of pine and woodsmoke mixing together, the toy train rattling through 102 tunnels as the plains disappear behind you.
It's the kind of place that slows everything down. And for couples, that's often exactly what you need.
Shimla has a rare quality: it's romantic without trying to be. The British-era architecture creates a backdrop that feels like a film set. The walking-only Mall Road means no traffic noise — just footsteps, conversation, and the occasional accordion from a street musician. And the scale is just right — large enough to have great food and coffee, small enough to feel intimate.
The best part? It's genuinely affordable. A couple can have a very good 4-day trip — boutique hotel, good food, day trips — for under ₹20,000 total.
The Ridge & Mall Road: This is Shimla's heartbeat. Walk from Christ Church (a stunning neo-Gothic landmark) along the Ridge to the Scandal Point. The view of snow-capped peaks to the north is best at sunrise — arrive by 6:30 AM before the crowds arrive.
Jakhu Temple Trek: A 2.5 km hike from Mall Road brings you to the Jakhu Temple (dedicated to Hanuman, at 2,455m). The trail through dense rhododendron forest is genuinely beautiful. Warning: the resident monkeys are bold — keep sunglasses and snacks out of reach.
Kufri Day Trip: 16km from Shimla, Kufri sits at 2,622m and usually has snow from December through February. Horse rides, yak rides, and a small Himalayan wildlife sanctuary make it a fun half-day trip.
Chail: Often overlooked by tourists, Chail (45km from Shimla) was built by the Maharaja of Patiala after the British banned him from Shimla. The palace, cricket ground (world's highest at 2,444m), and wildlife sanctuary make it one of the best day trips in Himachal.
The Toy Train (Kalka-Shimla Railway): A UNESCO World Heritage railway that climbs from 656m to 2,076m through 102 tunnels, 800+ bridges, and 1 km of wild Himalayan scenery per minute. Take the 5:30 AM Shivalik Express from Kalka for the clearest views.
By Train (Recommended): The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is the most memorable way. Take an overnight train from Delhi/Chandigarh to Kalka, then the 5:30 AM Shivalik Express to Shimla (5 hours, ₹275). Book at IRCTC well in advance — these seats sell out.
By Bus: HRTC Volvo buses from Delhi ISBT Kashmere Gate run overnight (₹800–1,200 per person, 10–12 hours). From Chandigarh, buses run every 30 minutes (₹300, 3 hours).
By Car/Self-Drive: NH5 from Chandigarh to Shimla is a beautiful drive (3–4 hours, 115km). Note that vehicles are not allowed on Mall Road — you'll park at the bottom and walk or take a lift.
Nearest Airport: Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti) has limited connectivity. Most travellers fly into Chandigarh (1-hour flight from Delhi) and drive/bus from there.
Café Sol (Mall Road): Best coffee in Shimla, open-face sandwiches, and a mountain view terrace. Arrive early — it fills up by 10 AM.
Ashiana & Goofa Restaurant (Ridge): Run by HPTDC, this is Shimla's most iconic dining spot — a cave restaurant carved into the hillside with sweeping views. The Himachali thali is excellent.
Himachali cuisine to try: Dham (a festive rice-and-lentil spread), Siddu (stuffed bread made with wheat flour), Chha Gosht (marinated slow-cooked mutton). The Himachali meal at Hotel Combermere is the most authentic in the city.
Indian Coffee House (Mall Road): An institution since 1957. Chaotic, affordable, and surprisingly charming.
